Surrounding Area | Plettenberg Bay
Plettenberg Bay is home to some of South Africa’s most stunning beaches and it’s easy to see why it’s such a beach lover’s paradise. With 35 km of Indian Ocean coastline and 15 km of soft, sandy shores, it’s no surprise Plett was crowned “Africa’s Leading Beach Destination” in 2020 at the World Travel Awards.
Throughout the year you’ll find beachgoers of all ages swimming, surfing or just relaxing with their toes in the sand. Plett’s beaches have something for everyone, there are family-friendly spots with lagoons for little ones, as well as hot spots for surfing and bodyboarding perfect for thrill-seekers chasing waves. Six of Plett’s beaches also hold Blue Flag status which means they’re clean, safe and absolutely gorgeous.
If you’re staying at the lodge, Robberg 5 Beach is right on your doorstep—it’s just a quick 2 minute walk (130m) across the road. This Blue Flag beach is known for its soft golden sand and calm waters, making it ideal for swimming, sunbathing, beach games, or a long peaceful walk along the shore.
Full-time lifeguards are on duty during the summer (1 November to 31 April), clean public toilets and parking nearby. There’s even wheelchair access so that everyone can enjoy this stunning beach. Add in the incredible views of the Robberg Peninsula and it’s the perfect spot for a day by the sea.

Just a short 8-minute drive (4.1 km) from the lodge, you’ll find Lookout Beach well-loved for its picture-perfect views where the Keurbooms River meets the Indian Ocean. It’s the kind of spot where you could easily spend the whole day either soaking up the sun or splashing in the warm and clear waters.
This beach is popular with families thanks to its shallow, sheltered waters which are perfect for little ones to safely splash around in. For surfers, the exposed beach break and consistent waves make it a reliable spot to catch a wave year-round. You’ll also find kayakers taking advantage of the peaceful lagoon or heading out on guided sea kayaking safaris for something a bit more adventurous. Lookout Beach is a mix of natural beauty, family-friendly fun and easy access, making it a must-visit during your time in Plettenberg Bay.

Just a 20-minute drive (13.9 km) from the lodge, Keurboomstrand Beach is a more peaceful getaway compared to the busier beach spots in Plett. It’s named after the Keurboom tree which blooms with pretty pinkish-mauve flowers a few times a year.
The beach stretches for kilometres making it perfect for long and peaceful walks, picnics or a lazy day soaking up the beauty around you. At the far end of the beach, where the Keurbooms and Bitou Rivers meet, you’ll find a lagoon with its own little island. This is a great spot for fishing, boating or even canoeing.
The area is also known for its pretty amazing rock formations and caves, like the famous Arch Rock. Legend says it’s good luck if you can toss a stone through the small hole above the arch; but even if you miss, the scenery makes the effort worth it!

Tucked between the Keurbooms River mouth and Keurboomstrand, The Dunes Beach is a quieter, more laid-back spot that’s perfect for escaping the crowds. This Blue Flag beach is named after the impressive sand dunes that line its shores, giving it a unique and beautiful vibe.
The long stretch of sandy shores is ideal for peaceful walks, beach games or just relaxing. The warm Indian Ocean waters are great for swimming and if the conditions are just right, surfers and kite surfers love catching waves here.
The Dunes Beach is all about celebrating everything there is to love about the Western Cape’s beaches. With fewer people and plenty of space to stretch out, it’s a peaceful escape for families, couples or anyone craving a relaxing beach day.

This gem is another one of Plett’s Blue Flag beaches and is known for its quiet vibe and beautiful scenic surroundings. This quiet stretch of sand is actually an extension of Keurbooms Beach and a fantastic spot if you’re looking for something a bit less crowded to enjoy the sound of the waves and let the world fade away.
Singing Kettle Beach is also a great choice for families with small kids with plenty of room to build sandcastles, paddle in the calm water or enjoy an ice cream. One of the beach’s standout features is the iconic Arch Rock, a striking natural rock formation that’s become a bit of a local legend.

Plett's popular beaches are not just about sun and sand; they're also fantastic spots for wildlife enthusiasts. Throughout the year, dolphins can often be seen surfing the waves and seals from the nearby Robberg Peninsula colony love to pop by to say hello. If you’re visiting in the winter months (July to November), keep an eye out for southern right and humpback whales migrating along the coastline. These gentle giants are known to put on quite the show, breaching and blowing in the distance.
